Loeffler says Golovkin could fight Canelo or Chavez Jr.

15 april, 2017

Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions not only views Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as a possible opponent for his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin for September, but also Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as an option.

As far as Loeffler is concerned, the winner of the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight on May 6 will be the possible option for Golovkin in September.

It’s not just Canelo that Loeffler has his eyes on. It’s Chavez Jr. as well. Loeffler also says that if Golovkin wins his fight against Daniel Jacobs on March 18 and then beats the Canelo-Chavez Jr. winner later on this year, then a fight against Miguel Cotto could be an option for December.

Right now, Cotto is expected to be fighting a rematch with Canelo. That’s the fight that Cotto wants. It’s unclear whether he’ll still want that fight if Canelo loses to Chavez Jr. on May 6 or if he gets beaten by Golovkin in September. In the best possible world, Cotto would want to fight the winner of those fights when the smoke clears rather than fighting someone that lost to Golovkin.

It would make Cotto look bad if he chose to fight Canelo after he was knocked out by Golovkin. Cotto would look a lot better if he fought Golovkin under that scenario. Of course, you can’t force Cotto to do anything. If he wants to fight Canelo with him having been beaten by Golovkin, then there’s nothing you can do about it. That would be Cotto’s personal preference.

Loeffler said this to IBF TV about Golovkin vs. Jacobs and the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. fights:

“We tried hard to make that fight against Chavez Jr. two years ago,” said Loeffler. “Golovkin would have moved up to 168 to fight him. It would have been a great fight. It didn’t happen at the time. I think whoever wins that fight between Canelo and Chavez, and if Gennady is successful against Jacobs, it’s going to be a huge match-up. If Chavez can beat Canelo, all of a sudden he’s at the top spot for boxing. Then the match-up against Gennady against either one of these guys is going to be huge. I think it’s different weights for different situations [for Canelo]. I think Canelo is now bigger than Gennady. People we saying he’s too small for Genandy, and now he’s fighting at super middleweight division. I have to say that any discussions we had with Golden Boy was never about weight. It was always going to be at 160 pounds if that fight can be made. Again, Gennady and Abel are 100 percent focused on Jacobs. It’s going to be the toughest test of Gennady’s career. My job is to look forward to make the best fights that I can make. Whoever wins Chavez or Canelo is going to be a terrific match-up for Gennady. Canelo is one of the most marketable fighters in the sport of boxing. If he can pull off something like that, it would be a tremendous thing. I know Chavez wants to ruin his plans. I know Daniel Jacobs wants to ruin Gennady’s plans. If Gennady and Canelo win, Gennady is going to want to ruin Canelo’s plans to fight [Miguel] Cotto. If Gennady beats Canelo, then maybe the Cotto fight will be out there. Gennady’s always looking for the best match-up, and that’s why we have to give Lemieux a lot of credit. He was the first guy to get inside the ring with Gennady. We’ve got to give Daniel Jacobs a lot of credit, even though he was the mandatory. We’ve seen a lot of mandatories move out of position. We’ve seen a lot of champions move out of the way of Gennady and even vacate titles in order to avoid the fight. We’ve got to give Daniel Jacobs a lot of credit. He never hesitated to win the fight. The fans really respond to two major knockout artists fighting each other. Like I said at the press conference, there’s no rematch clause. It’s the winner take all here. Gennady worked so hard getting all the titles – WBA title, WBC title, IBF title, IBO title. All of that work is undone if Daniel Jacobs is victorious on March 18. Daniel Jacobs realizes with one victory, all of a sudden he’s at the top of the world of boxing. There’s really a tremendous amount at stake, not only for Triple G and Daniel Jacobs,” said Loeffler.

There is definitely a great deal at stake with the Golovkin-Jacobs and Canelo-Chavez Jr. fights. The ultimate winner from those fights could surprise a lot of boxing fans. It might not be who many people think it will be. Chavez Jr. would seem like the most unlikely out of everybody to end up as the ultimate winner of these fights, but you never know. Chavez Jr. has the size to wind up beating Canelo, Golovkin and Cotto.

It would be a hug upset if Chavez Jr. ran the table and won those three fights. It would totally resurrect his boxing career, and shock a lot of fans, because right now they do not see Chavez Jr. as getting past Canelo. However, that fight could very well be won by Chavez Jr. because Canelo is a small fighter at roughly 5’8” and not the 5’9” height that he’s listed as.

Canelo is just a really heavy fighter that takes advantage of his weight advantage over his opponents to win his fights. That weight can only help Canelo so many times before he eventually will fight someone that is immune to losing to a guy with a weight advantage.

Chavez Jr. will be the bigger fighter than Canelo on May 6. Whether Chavez Jr. can handle Canelo’s power is the big question. We saw in Chavez Jr’s fight against Andrzej Fonfara from the light heavyweight division, he couldn’t deal with his power. Chavez Jr. ended up quitting on his stool after being knocked down in round 9.

“They say Triple G has a great chin,” said trainer Naazim Richardson to Fighthub.com. “I’ll know when Daniel Jacobs hits him on it. If he walks through that, then Triple G has got a chin.”

Richardson should be asking whether Jacobs can handle the power of Golovkin, because there’s a very good chance that Jacobs will be hit first by Golovkin’s big shots.
